Vircon32 (website here) is a 32-bit virtual game console. It was designed from scratch with the intent of being as simple as possible but still offer decent capabilities for retro, arcade-style games. Vircon32 is an open project: anyone can make their own emulators, games or tools. And the console has already been integrated into several emulation front-ends, like EmulationStation as shown here. What can it do? On terms of power and features it is roughly in the same level as the 32-bit era home consoles like PSX and Saturn. But for simplicity this console is limited to 2D only, since even a basic 3D engine would add significant complexity to the console design and game programming. These are the basic console specs: - Screen: Resolution of 640x360 pixels, 16:9. True color. - Graphics: Support for transparencies, rotation and scaling. - Sound: 16 sample-based channels with CD quality sound. - Gamepads: D-Pad and 6 buttons + start. 4 gamepad ports. - Saving: Supports game saving via 1 MB memory cards. - Memory: 16 MB RAM, with games up to 2.5 GB.
