FFmpeg already has complete reference documentation, but this can be difficult to understanding. By adding concrete examples of features, these features become easier to understand, by giving the user something they can run they have something working that they can adapt, by linking to simpler examples the user can learn on the simple example sand then apply the more complicated features, by providing documentation that links to examples the user is given an opportunity to understand a feature through documentation and then continue. This guide provides is an index of features which goes through different FFmpeg features linked to recipes. FFmpeg has more features than a cookbook can cover completely but provides the ability to list filters and display their parameters as well as providing terse but useable reference documentation.
