Common options can be set on the root. For instance, the following entries will set the quiet flag for all commands, and a custom host name with gem release : Defaults for all options also can be specified as environment variables, for example GEM RELEASE PRETEND=true . Defaults specified in config files and environment variables can be overridden as command line options when issuing the respective gem command.
